Hello! Welcome to TheBox Office Report for the weekend of July 28-39, 2023.
1. Barbie
Weekend gross: $93M Total domestic gross: $351.4M Last weekend: 1st Percent drop: 43
Another weekend, another big haul for Barbie and Oppenheimer. The two films dropped just 43 and 44 percent in their second weekend, allowing Barbenheimer to hold off Disney’s Haunted Mansion.
Barbie notched the seventh biggest second weekend, passing The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $92.3 million. (It’s the biggest second weekend that didn’t crack the $100 million barrier.)
Greta Gerwig’s box office smash is already the No. 4 on the domestic chart for 2023 and will likely pass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($358.9 million) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($378.8 million) by the end of next weekend.

2. Oppenheimer
Weekend gross: $46.2M Total domestic gross: $174.1M Last weekend: 2nd Percent drop: 44
Things are also look great for Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan’s latest is already No. 9 on that same 2023 chart, powering past Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny this weekend.
Oppenheimer still has a way to go to move up the domestic box office chart for Nolan’s films. A big third weekend should push it past Interstellar ($188 million), Dunkirk ($190.1 million) and Batman Begins ($205.3 million).
3. Haunted Mansion
Weekend gross: $24.2M Total domestic gross: $24.2M Last weekend: New release Percent drop: NA
Haunted Mansion is Disney’s second attempt at turning the theme park ride of the same name into a film franchise. Twenty years ago, The Haunted Mansion hit theaters — and grossed $24.3 million its opening weekend. Yup. Basically the same as the Haunted Mansion did this weekend.
Weekend gross: $10.7M Total domestic gross: $139.2M Last weekend: 4th Percent drop: 45
Paramount couldn’t have expected Barbenheimer to become the cultural moment it did when they scheduled Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One just over a week ahead of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Recent Mission: Impossible films have been major box office players but Dead Reckoning has been unable to hold off challengers.
Turns out Paramount should’ve considered moving Dead Reckoning, especially when it became clear that Oppenheimer was going to take all the IMAX and other premium large format screens.

Next weekend
I’m rooting for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, but I could very well see the animated film opening behind Barbie’s third weekend but ahead of Oppenheimer.
