Nissin Geki Spicy Carbonara Chicken

I love a nice bowl of ramen. Back when DC had its own Momofuku (and it still served the same menu as David Chang’s flagship NYC location), my wife and I used to go there for her birthday and eat everything on the menu. More recently, I had a tasty miso ramen from a vendor at Union Market.

My chopstick skills are super rusty, but that Union Market meal gave me a bit of practice before it was time to taste both flavors of the Nissin Geki lineup of noodles.

“Ramen fans love bold, intense flavors,” Priscila Stanton, Nissin’s senior vice president of marketing, said in the company’s announcement. “With Geki, we’re turning up the heat while staying true to Nissin’s commitment to quality and accessibility. These new flavors offer a range of spice levels to suit every taste — delivering an exciting, bold noodle experience without the premium price tag.”

Spicy Carbonara Chicken is the milder of the two flavors, earning a 3-pepper score on the package. The heat level on this variety is enough to make eating a bowl of Spicy Carbonara Chicken noodles exciting, but not too much to make it feel like you may have made a mistake.

Nissin Geki Spicy Hot Chicken

Spicy Hot Chicken is noticeably hotter than Spicy Carbonara Chicken. This flavor — with a full 5-pepper score on its package — trades out the creaminess that I enjoyed in the milder flavor for a very heat-forward sauce.
