It would be amaze, amaze, amaze if ‘Project Hail Mary’ got an Oscar nom for its Rocky puppeteer

Amazon MGM Studios is pushing to get James Ortiz a Best Supporting Actor nod. PLUS: Patrick Stewart died, ‘Dune: Part Three’ unleashes a new trailer, and so much ‘SNL’ news.

Hey there, Popculturology fans. Welcome to the Friday newsletter.

This weekend is the fourth anniversary of Popculturology relaunching as a newsletter. The Omnicosm wouldn’t exist without Popculturology, so I’m offering a whopping 40 percent off yearly The Omnicosm+ subscriptions in honor of this anniversary.

You know what else you should spend your money on? The newly revealed popcorn buckets for Dune: Part Three. After the infamous Dune: Part Two popcorn bucket launched the craze (and earned its own SNL sketch), the new buckets are even more, um, risqué. Seriously. The popcorn bucket with two sandworms popping out of it dares you to explain why you think it’s problematic ...

🚨
In this edition of Popculturology: Project Hail Mary and James Ortiz, Patrick Stewart, Ghost Rider and Connor Storrie, Dune: Part Three, SNL UK, SNL and Inde Navarrette, and KPop Demon Hunters.

Fist my bump, Academy

When I rewatched Project Hail Mary a few weeks back, I wondered if the film’s Oscar moment had already passed it by. Amazon MGM Studios isn’t conceding the moment.

The studio unveiled a 15-category push for Oscar season, with one that would be a historic nomination if it happens: A Supporting Actor push for James Ortiz, the man who brought Rocky to life through both his puppeteering and voice acting.

I would love to see this happen. Rocky is the heart of the film, and without the relationship between Ryan Gosling and Ortiz’s work, Project Hail Mary doesn’t work. (We’ve known this was possibly in the works since the Academy declared Ortiz eligible for Best Supporting Actor back in April.)

But I don’t have hope that the Academy will rise to this moment. Remember when Andy Serkis delivered a groundbreaking motion-capture performance as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Not only did the Academy not honor Serkis with a nomination, they gave the Oscar for Best Visual Effects to Hugo instead of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. (Gold Derby)

Patrick Stewart 1940-2026

We got that shocking news on Thursday that Patrick Stewart had passed away “following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.” Stewart hadn’t publicly disclosed his health issues, so this took people by surprise.
