With Ghirardelli moving into the cookie game, how would Pepperidge Farm respond? You don’t become the king of premium cookies without innovating, which is why you can now find Pepperidge Farm Sourdough Cookies in the cookie aisle.
“Sourdough is having a moment, and we saw an opportunity to bring it to the cookie aisle in a completely new way,” Ama Auwarter, vice president of Pepperidge Farm Cookies & Bakery, said in the company’s announcement. “Our first-of-its-kind Sourdough Cookies combine real sourdough with soft and chewy textures and bakery-inspired flavors for a uniquely Pepperidge Farm take on the trend.”
Pepperidge Farm Sourdough Cookies made their debut at the end of October, with three flavors at launch: Dark Chocolate Sourdough with Brown Butter Cookies, Cinnamon Sugar Sourdough with Vanilla Bean Cookies and White Chocolate Sourdough with Raspberry Cookies.
The company calls this new lineup “a first-of-its-kind innovation to the cookie aisle with new Sourdough Cookies, combining real sourdough with specialty ingredients to create a soft and chewy cookie experience worth savoring.”

What they cost
You can currently buy bags of Pepperidge Farm Sourdough Cookies for $5.89 at Walmart. The lineup will expand to Kroger stores, Target and Amazon beginning in January.

Between those two flavors, we’re obviously starting with Dark Chocolate Sourdough. (Is there a more American cookie than chocolate chip? I’d accept Oreo, but I don’t think we’re going to get a Pepperidge Farm/Oreo collab.) For this cookie, Pepperidge Farm upgraded its core ingredient, using “indulgent dark chocolate chunks.”

I enjoy a soft cookie, and Pepperidge Farm found a new way to deliver that style of cookie. I know how sourdough bread works, but I wasn’t quite sure how a sourdough cookie would work. The sourdough tang pops through, complementing the dark chocolate. This cookie really delivers if you’re looking for some solid chocolate chunks.

When I began this taste test, my attention was fully on the Dark Chocolate Sourdough with Brown Butter Cookies. They very much felt like the star foundation of this Pepperidge Farm lineup.
Cinnamon Sugar Sourdough with Vanilla Bean was a huge surprise.

I’ve never had a cookie with bits of “crunchy pearl sugar.” What a way to elevate a cookie. Dropping actual bits of sugar into a cookie is a brilliant move, and those pearl sugar crystals deliver not only sweetness but also a very satisfying crunch.
