It’s not easy being a root beer fan who also sticks to zero sugar sodas. The increased distribution of Barq’s Zero Sugar Root Beer over the past year has been a huge development, and I was excited to see that Mug Root Beer Floats Vanilla Howler was also available in Zero Sugar.

“This first-ever limited-edition release brings together the bold, rich taste of Mug Root Beer with a smooth, creamy vanilla flavor to capture that classic root beer float experience,” Mug VP of Marketing Michael Smith said in the company’s announcement. “It’s a new twist that stays true to the Mug flavor fans know and love, while giving them something even more indulgent to enjoy all summer long.”

Drinking a Mug Root Beer takes me back to the root beer I used to get when I’d have lunch at my grandpa’s house. (Non-zero sugar version, obviously.) The Vanilla Howler maintains that nostalgic taste while also offering a nicely balanced vanilla touch.

Bonus review! Mug Root Beer Floats Vanilla Howler isn’t the only fun new summer beverage from PepsiCo. They also introduced Bubly Melted Ice Pop, a flavor that “taps into the best of summer memories as a kid, from long days at the pool to chasing down the ice cream truck.”

I used to drink a lot of sparkling water, including Bubly, and jumping back into that world after going almost exclusively with soda and prebiotic soda for the past few years is a bit jarring. Bubly Melted Ice Pop offers hints of, well, a melted ice pop, but I’d prefer something with more oomph.
