The first new Halo Top flavors in two years have turned me into a fan

I love ice cream. Since you’re reading Snackology, I’m gonna assume you too love ice cream. Over the past year, this newsletter has brought you reviews of ice cream with gummy worms in it, ice cream inspired by Ted Lasso and ice cream inside a taco-shaped cone. Snackology even reviewed an ice cream maker!
For this edition of Snackology, we’re turning to one of the mainstays of the ice cream aisle thanks to the release of Halo Top Mint Chocolate Cookie and Halo Top Salted Caramel Almond. These two flavors are the first additions to the brand’s Mix-Ins lineup since the category was introduced two years ago.
It’s been years since I’ve tried a new Halo Top flavor, but I have a duty to you all to leave no new ice cream flavor untested. And mint chocolate chip just happens to be my favorite flavor of ice cream.
This weekend is the fourth anniversary of Popculturology relaunching as a newsletter. The Omnicosm wouldn’t exist without Popculturology, so I’m offering a whopping 40 percent off yearly The Omnicosm+ subscriptions in honor of this anniversary.

The rollout for Mint Chocolate Cookie and Salted Caramel Almond begins with Food Lion, H-E-B and Hy-Vee locations, with pints being priced at $5.99. Availability is set to expand in 2027.

In fairness, this isn’t mint chocolate chip. It’s Mint Chocolate Cookie, which is mint ice cream with fudge swirls and crushed up chocolate sandwich cookie bits in it. (Legally, these are not Oreo bits.) In my book, mint chocolate chip and this cookie-adjacent flavor are almost the same thing.

I was shocked at how good Halo Top Mint Chocolate Cookie is. It blew me away.
I’m not sure why I haven’t been eating Halo Top all these years. I used to have a bowl of ice cream every night, but after I left a yearly physical before I turned 40 with the advice that I make some health changes, I gave up that nightly tradition.
With an entire pint of Halo Top Mint Chocolate Cookie clocking in at only 490 calories, could this be the secret to letting ice cream back in my life on a less restrictive basis?
My wife was also surprised at how good this flavor was. We both have memories of buying Halo Top a decade ago when it became trendy only to find ourselves disappointed by it. Did they tweak the recipe at some point? Is this just a superior flavor?
Every bite of Halo Top Mint Chocolate Cookie is creamy and packed with bits of fudge and chocolate cookies. If I didn’t know this was light ice cream, I would’ve never expected it based on how successfully Halo Top pulled off this flavor.

When Halo Top introduced its Mix-Ins lineup at the end of 2024, there were eight flavors. There are some fantastic-sounding flavors in that original bunch — I need to try Sweet Cream Cold Brew now — but a classic like Salted Caramel Almond wasn’t in that lineup.

Halo Top was wise to add this flavor since they also knocked this one out of the ... ice cream park? Creamery?
Like the Mint Chocolate Cookie flavor, Halo Top Salted Caramel Almond is super creamy and nailed the mixture of “salted caramel swirls and crunchy praline almonds.” This is an indulgent ice cream, and I didn’t find myself missing anything despite it also being only 490 calories per pint.
