‘Practical Magic 2’ ends the spell of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

After six straight weekends of Spider-Man: Brand New Day holding the No. 1 spot, Practical Magic 2 has ended Spidey’s spell. The legacy sequel grossed an impressive $30 million, returning to the top of the box office for the first time since the original film premiered almost three decades ago with $13.1 million.

2. Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Weekend gross: $8.4M
Total domestic gross: $935.2M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 54

This could change when the official numbers come in on Monday, but it looks like Spider-Man: Brand New Day wrapped up its seventh weekend in theaters just shy of passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s $936.7 million domestic record.

This is gonna sound crazy, but Brand New Day, despite being on the verge of cracking what I thought was an unbeatable record, has kind of lost steam over the last few weekends. It looked like the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie was going to blow past The Force Awakens and become the first film to gross $1 billion in North America, but that seems like a tall order now that Brand New Day is turning in sub-$10 million weekends.

3. The Odyssey

Last weekend: 2nd

Speaking of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s current momentum, there’s a good chance we might see The Odyssey jump ahead of Brand New Day over the next weekend or two. Only a million bucks separated The Odyssey and Spider-Man this weekend, and the Christopher Nolan film has never fallen more than 43 percent weekend to weekend.

The Odyssey clinched its own major milestone this weekend, becoming Nolan’s first movie to pass $600 million in North America.

4. Runner

Weekend gross: $6.4M
Total domestic gross: $6.4M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

I’m sorry, how did we end up with Runner and The Runner both premiering in September 2026? If you’re trying to tell them apart, Runner is the one that actually opened in theaters and stars Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, while The Runner is streaming on Prime Video and got everyone asking how Gal Gadot somehow stumbled into an acting career.

5. Coyote vs. Acme

Weekend gross: $6.2M
Total domestic gross: $47.8M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 48

Coyote vs. Acme is still in the top five! Ketchup Entertainment paid $50 million to acquire the film that David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery desperately wanted to kill in exchange for a tax write-off, and the hybrid live-action/animated film is about to pass that mark at the domestic box office.

The Coyote vs. Acme steelbook is also up for preorder. This is one you definitely should add to your physical media collection.

Beyond the Top Five

• Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Oasis doc debuted with $1.4 million across 1,225 theaters this weekend.
