I’m a bit behind on this one, but Wendy’s introduced an upgraded version of its iconic Spicy Chicken Sandwich last month. There was a time — before every fast food restaurant had its own chicken sandwich and a spicy version of that chicken sandwich — when the Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich was pretty much the entire game.
But since we live in a world where the chicken sandwich game has been radically elevated, Wendy’s needed to do something to improve the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. For the “reimagined” version of the sandwich, Wendy’s has highlighted five upgrades: A “new bold” marinade, premium panko-style breading, a potato bun, “ rich homestyle” mayo and the addition of pickles.
The bun and mayo are a huge improvement over the previous version of Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich. (So too was the presentation, with the chain joining Burger King when it comes to upgrading the box the sandwich comes in.) But the chicken patty itself was nowhere near as thick or juicy as the chicken patties I’ve gotten on the flagship chicken sandwiches at Popeyes, KFC or McDonald’s.
