Remember when SunnyD debuted back in the late 1990s? Back when we used to call it by its full government name, Sunny Delight? Those were wild times. My mom never bought SunnyD for us, so I’d have to mooch off my friends who had households that did. Our daughter is a fan of SunnyD now, but she knows that the one place she can get a bottle is at the food truck at one of our favorite breweries.

I wonder if when we likely stop by that brewery before Halloween, they’ll have SpookyD instead of the classic SunnyD.

“Halloween is all about embracing the unexpected, and SpookyD brings that spirit to life in a way only SunnyD can,” SunnyD’s parent company said in its announcement. “We’ve created a beverage that’s more than just a seasonal offering — it’s an experience. Whether you’re hosting friends, celebrating with family or simply getting into the Halloween spirit, SpookyD adds a little mystery and a lot of fun to the occasion.”

YES, IT’S ANOTHER FOOD MYSTERY.

You know how in a horror movie, a ghost often lingers in the periphery only to suddenly reveal itself? Well, the mystery flavor lurking in my bottle of SpookyD is currently in that first phase.

“Is it fruity? Candy-inspired? Citrus with a spooky twist?” SunnyD asks. I’ve thought maybe lime. My wife thought pear. Something with agave? I’m so close to placing it ...

Whatever the flavor, SpookyD is good, but it doesn’t hit in the same way that the standard SunnyD manages to kick your tastebuds back to when you were like 13.
