Sony’s latest attempt at a Spider-Man spinoff opened even worse than ‘Madame Web.’
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Dec. 13-15, 2024.
Weekend gross: $26.6M
Total domestic gross: $337.5M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 48
The lock that Moana 2 and Wicked have on the top of the box office chart continued this weekend, with the two films both notching hauls in the $20 million range.
Moana 2 continues to put distance between itself and the original Moana, now leading its predecessor $337.5 million to $248.8 million in North America and $717 million to $684.7 million worldwide.
The sequel should pass Zootopia’s $341.3 domestic gross the next day or so before turning its attention to Frozen II ($477.4 million) and Frozen ($401 million) — the only two Disney animated films (not counting Pixar releases) that have cracked the $400 million mark.
Weekend gross: $22.5M
Total domestic gross: $359M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 38
Wicked is just a few million dollars away from passing Despicable Me 4 ($361 million) to become the third highest grossing film of 2024. I expected Moana 2 to pass the musical adaptation’s domestic gross, but the weekly gap between the two is narrowing.
