It’s a good thing Olipop chose Caramel Apple over pumpkin spice

The promise of ‘glossy ribbons of buttery caramel flavor’ had me worried, but this is definitely better than a PSL soda.

It’s just a few days past a year since the SpongeBob SquarePants-themed Olipop Pineapple Paradise opened my eyes to the wonders of prebiotic soda. Since that fateful day last September, I’ve been impressed by this beverage genre, enjoying Pepsi Prebiotic Sodas and Poppi Punch Pop too. (The rumored Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Prebiotic Soda absolutely has my snack radar on high too.) I’m even drinking a Grape Olipop as I write this newsletter.

What better way to celebrate this anniversary than with the limited-edition Olipop Caramel Apple?

“Inspired by one of fall’s most beloved seasonal treats, Caramel Apple layers glossy ribbons of buttery caramel flavor over the crisp snap of green apple, balancing tart, sweet and smooth into one rich, irresistible sip,” Olipop writes of this flavor.

I love that Olipop wisely chose to go in a direction that wasn’t pumpkin spice for this seasonal soda. Not only would a prebiotic soda that tastes like pumpkin probably be a bad move, the market is already saturated. Let’s make apple the new flavor of fall, people.

The cost

I haven’t seen official pricing yet, but I’d imagine that Olipop Caramel Apple will be priced the same as any other flavor of the prebiotic soda. For example, you can get a single can of the delightful Olipop Crisp Apple for $2.69 at Target, while a four-pack goes for $9.79.

Olipop Caramel Apple will be available at retailers including Target, Walmart and Whole Foods beginning today, Sept. 9.

The thoughts

I’m gonna be honest with you, Snackology readers. I was worried about this flavor. As someone who finds the buttered popcorn flavor of Jelly Belly jellybeans disgusting, the Olipop Caramel Apple’s promise of “glossy ribbons of buttery caramel flavor” set off alarm bells across my taste buds.

And, yes, that first sniff and sip were both buttery. But then the apple side of this flavor popped through. It took a few sips to fully calibrate my reaction to Olipop Caramel Apple, but in the end I found it to be an appropriately autumnal version of the Crisp Apple flavor of Olipop that I usually have stocked in our home.

On the spectrum of fruit-based and fruit-adjacent flavors of Olipop, Caramel Apple falls closer to something like Banana Cream — richer flavor, thicker mouthfeel — than Crisp Apple or Grape.
