Matt Damon returns to ‘SNL,’ brings Brett Kavanaugh with him
Thanks to Jeremy Culhane, Mikey Day, Marcello Hernandez and Jane Wickline, this episode likely gave us our best ‘Update’ of the season.
The animated movie fetched a box office win while ‘Companion’ separated itself from the rest of the pack.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2025.
Weekend gross: $36M
Total domestic gross: $36M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
In a weekend with no big releases, Universal Pictures’ Dog Man scored a surprisingly big debut. The animated adaption of the Dav Pilkey franchise opened with $36 million, blowing away the completion.
Dog Man’s estimated $36 million opening weekend is almost exactly what The Wild Robot opened with last September. That animated masterpiece, which was snubbed for a Best Picture nomination at this year’s Oscars, debuted with $35.8 million on the way to a domestic haul of $143.9 million.
In the Pilkey canon, Dog Man’s first weekend outperformed the $23.9 million that Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie grossed over its debut back in 2017.
Weekend gross: $9.5M
Total domestic gross: $9.5M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
While it wasn’t the $36 million that Dog Man dug up this weekend, Warner Bros.’ Companion still managed to easily outdo returning movies like Mufasa: The Lion King.
