Hey there, The Omnicosm readers. I have some big news today: Deep SNL Thoughts is becoming The Cold Open.
When I spun Popculturology’s coverage of SNL into its own newsletter last year, I stuck with Deep SNL Thoughts as its brand, carrying over the name of my Saturday Night Live recaps for this standalone newsletter. But it never felt quite right.
First off, Deep SNL Thoughts doesn’t really roll off the tongue when you’re telling someone the name of the newsletter. And, while it was meant to pay homage to the iconic Jack Handey sketches on SNL, that led to the work I was doing getting buried in years — decades? — of Internet history about those very sketches.
So the era of The Cold Open begins today.
SNL going on hiatus for February as NBC turns its attention to the Olympics felt like a good time to make the switch. You don’t need to change a thing — The Cold Open will continue to arrive in your inbox just like Deep SNL Thoughts always has. Hopefully you’ll follow along as The Omnicosm builds on its extensive SNL coverage.
