‘Civil War’ wins a quiet box office battle

1. Civil War

Despite a slew of new releases, it was a quiet weekend at the box office. Civil War squeaked by for the No. 1 spot, barely outgrossing Abigail. (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare weren’t far behind either.)

Civil War is now Alex Garland’s biggest box office hit, both in North America and worldwide. The film’s $44.9 million domestic haul tops the $32.7 million that Annihilation grossed in 2018, with its worldwide haul of $48.4 million topping Annihilation’s $43.1 million too.

2. Abigail

Total domestic gross: $10.2M

While Abigail appears to be a critical hit (it has an 83 percent critical score and an 88 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), directors Matt Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillet didn’t match the lofty opening weekends of their last two films — 2022’s Scream ($30 million debut) and Scream VI ($44.4 million debut).
