Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Sept. 5-7, 2025.

1. The Conjuring: Last Rites

Weekend gross: $83M
Total domestic gross: $83M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Looks like the Great Pumpkin brought a Halloween blockbuster early. The Conjuring: Last Rites opened with a massive $83 million this weekend, blowing away the previous records for the sprawling Conjuring Universe.

Last Rites is the tenth film in the franchise, which was kicked off by The Conjuring in 2013 before expanding with sequels, prequels and spinoffs that include Annabelle, The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona.

Up until this point, the franchise’s overall high mark for an opening weekend was The Nun’s $53.8 million in 2018, with the original Conjuring’s $41.9 million being the best debut for that specific corner of James Wan’s horror movies.

2. Hamilton

Weekend gross: $10M
Total domestic gross: $10M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Yes, this is the same Hamilton that hit Disney+ back in July 2020. The filmed version of the play was originally supposed to be released in theaters in October 2021, but the pandemic led to Disney dropping the movie on its streaming service instead.

A $10 million opening weekend isn’t bad for Hamilton considering that everyone already saw the movie on Disney+ five years ago, but what could this one have done had it opened in theaters in 2021 as originally planned?

I guess there’s always the chance that Lin-Manuel Miranda will get an actual adaptation of Hamilton into gear. (I bet In the Heights and Wicked director Jon M. Chu might have some ideas …)
