When you think of the regions in the country that are best known for hot dogs, you probably go straight to Chicago or New York City. But as a Rochester native, I’m going to let you in on a secret: The trio of Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse all have their own fantastic local hot dog companies. I’ll never say no to a Zweigle’s white hot, but I’ve also been lucky to find both Sahlen’s and Hofmann in the Northern Virginia area over the past decade.
Buffalo’s representation in Western and Central New York hot dog culture has kicked off summer with Sahlen’s Firecracker Hot & Spicy Smokehouse Hot Dogs. Made with pork and beef, the Firecracker hot dog features “the right balance of Smokehouse flavor and heat without being overpowering.”
I really enjoyed the Firecracker hot dogs. They have just the right amount of heat without being overpowering or gimmicky, and they build on the classic taste and snap of a Sahlen’s hot dog.
