A victory for ‘Verity’ as Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ hits rock bottom

Warner Bros. expected ‘Digger’ to play like a blockbuster. It’s instead one of the worst opening weekends of the actor’s career.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Oct. 2-4, 2026.

1. Verity

Weekend gross: $32.6M
Total domestic gross: $32.6M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Verity easily won the weekend thanks to three factors: Last week’s No. 1, Avengers: Endgame Encore, playing as an event film last weekend; no major threat from a new release; and Tom Cruise’s Digger bombing.

The Colleen Hoover cinematic universe continues to expand, with Verity adding another No. 1 opening weekend to the author’s growing list of adaptations. Verity’s $32.6 million debut trails It Ends With Us’s $50 million opening weekend, but easily beats the debuts of Regretting You ($13.7 million) and Reminders of Him ($18 million).

2. Resident Evil

Weekend gross: $12.5M
Total domestic gross: $124.9M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 46

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot was already the franchise’s highest-grossing installment in North America, and now it’s working its way up the series’ worldwide chart. The film’s $245.4 million global haul puts it behind Resident Evil: Afterlife ($295.9 million) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($314.1 million).

3. Heart of the Beast

Weekend gross: $11M
Total domestic gross: $38.4M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 45

The Brad Pitt film dropped a respectable 45 percent from its opening weekend.

4. Primetime

Weekend gross: $8M
Total domestic gross: $34.1M
Last weekend: 4th
Percent drop: 58

I was kind of surprised to see that Primetime didn’t have a similar hold to Heart of the Beast. The buzzy Robert Pattinson film dropped 58 percent this weekend, putting it in danger of actually slipping to No. 5 once the actual numbers come in on Monday.

5. Digger

Weekend gross: $8M
Total domestic gross: $8M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Digger was supposed to be a critical and box office triumph for Tom Cruise. Instead, the Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed film couldn’t even break $10 million over its opening weekend while notching a 51 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s easy to forget that Cruise has never been a guy who opens massive blockbusters. His films have been reliable hits, but Top Gun: Maverick’s $126.7 million debut is his only opening weekend to crack $100 million. That said, an $8 million opening weekend is a historically low number for Cruise. It’s the second-worst debut for a Cruise movie that opened after 2000, joining Lions for Lambs’s $6.7 million in that category. Even Rock of Ages ($14.4 million) grossed more than $10 million.

“This theatre was still running nearly completely sold out IMAX screenings of THE ODYSSEY until last Thursday lol,” podcast producer Jesse Hawken wrote, flagging how few seats had been sold at an IMAX theater in Toronto.

While Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) only played in 1,000+ theaters once over the 26 weekends it was in theaters, when Iñárritu’s The Revenant went wide in 3,375 theaters, it scored a $39.8 million third weekend. In addition to winning Leonardo DiCaprio his long-sought-after Oscar for Best Actor, The Revenant even jumped up to No. 1 two weekends after going wide.

Beyond the Top Five

  • Avengers: Endgame Encore: The updated version of Avengers: Endgame grossed $4.4 million in North America, bringing its domestic total up to $894.6 million. Will Disney leave it in theaters another week or two to allow Endgame to join Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($954.5 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million) in the $900 million club? Endgame has also reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the worldwide chart, with its $2.926 billion passing Avatar’s $2.924 billion total.
