Follow your nose to Cocoa Loops and Froot Loops Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes

What happens when Froot Loops go beyond the two key components — fruit flavor and loop shape — that have made them a breakfast classic?

Follow your nose to Cocoa Loops and Froot Loops Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes

I grew up with a pretty basic pantry of cereal options. Rice Krispies, Cheerios (maybe Honey Nut Cheerios) and the late Raisin Squares. Every so often, though, our great aunt would send us home with a box of Froot Loops.

Froot Loops broke the rules of our cereal shelf. They were bright. They were colorful. They were sugary. Honestly, the only thing greater at that point than scoring a box of Froot Loops was being the person who got the tiny box of Corn Pops from the multipack of cereals that you could cut open and pour milk right into them. (As the oldest of four, it was my birthright to get those boxes of Corn Pops.) Back in the 1990s, Froot Loops left every other cereal in their rainbow-colored dust.

I’m old enough to remember when Froot Loops expanded to include green, blue and purple cereal bits. The addition of marshmallows to Froot Loops might’ve even been a step too far, but I welcomed that update with open arms too.

On several occasions, our daughter has told me that Froot Loops are her favorite cereal. (She’s also told me that Raisin Bran Crunch is her favorite cereal, which is a choice I respect.) It’s fun to see Froot Loops continue its hold on breakfast with yet another generation of cereal lovers, and it’s even more fun to know that the food scientists behind Toucan Sam are still looking for new ways to update the classic cereal.

Which brings us Cocoa Loops and Froot Loops Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes, two new takes on Froot Loops that you can now find in the cereal aisle.

Both of these new cereals represent a pretty big swing for Froot Loops, as the cereal has traditionally stuck to two core tenets: The flavor? Fruit. The shape? Loops. In the case of Cocoa Loops, Kellogg’s has swapped out the fruity flavor for chocolate, and with Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes, the loop shape has been cast aside.

Are these radical changes worth it? Do these two new cereals honor the deep legacy of Froot Loops?

What they cost

At Walmart, a 16.6 oz. box of Cocoa Loops and a 17.8 oz. box of Froot Loops Glazed Donut Holes were both $4.98.

My thoughts

I’ve had tabs open on my phone for both Cocoa Loops and Froot Loops Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes for weeks, and with the calendar finally ticking over to 2026, I was able to buy both new releases after countless refreshes of Walmart’s website.

Cocoa Loops

Kellogg’s didn’t cut any corners when it came to developing Cocoa Loops. It would’ve been super easy to have just swapped out the fruit flavors for chocolate when transitioning from Froot Loops to Cocoa Loops, but Kellogg’s seems to have taken this cereal back to square one in its development.

“Toucan Sam has been keeping a secret!” Kellogg’s writes. “For 65 years, he’s been hiding his looove for chooocolate and is now ready to share it with the world.”

The loops are a consistent size, without the occasional smaller, harder cereal bit you often find in Froot Loops. That consistency makes it feel like you’re eating a bigger cereal than you’d be used to from a bowl of Froot Loops.

The chocolate flavor goes all the way through each loop. If you break one in half, the inside has the same flavor and coloring as the outside. This might sound trivial, but pour yourself a bowl of Chocolate Cheerios and watch the chocolate coating dissolve away. Kellogg’s could’ve easily produced a generic loop cereal and added a chocolate dusting (which would’ve allowed them to repurpose that loop cereal for future flavors), but they instead put the work in and delivered a pretty excellent chocolate-y take on Froot Lops.

I had high hopes going into Cocoa Loops, and they didn’t disappoint. There’s a high bar for a chocolate cereal thanks to Cocoa Puffs, and while I can’t say that Cocoa Loops met that level of prestige, they got pretty close. I’m excited to keep eating these for breakfast.

The ultimate endorsement for Cocoa Loops came when our daughter asked for her own bowl after tasting a few for the purposes of this review.

Also, when did Toucan Sam get some nephews and a niece? And why do two of their names sound dangerously like ripoffs of Huey, Dewey and Louie?

Froot Loops Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes

After seeing several boxes from Kellogg’s Glazed Donut Holes line on the clearance table at the front of my grocery store, I had assumed the sub brand was petering out. But it turns out that Kellogg’s was saving Froot Loops, one of its premiere brands, for a crossover with Glazed Donut Holes.

“Follow your nose to a tasty, donut hole-shaped cereal that will one up your breakfast game,” Kellogg’s writes. “Blueberry flavored cereal is getting a glaze up with its crunchy, sweet bites, made especially for donut lovers and fans of Kellogg’s Froot Loops. This cereal is a crossover of fun with delicious blueberry flavor in a crispy round shape with a decadent glaze that adds a sweet flavor to every bite.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the Glazed Donut Holes line, Kellogg’s launched it by repurposing three of its cereals — Frosted Flakes, Apple Jacks and Krave — as spherical sugar bombs. I thought the trio of Glazed Donut Holes cereals were OK, with the Krave version probably being the best since it was chocolate, but none of these cereals were ones that I was adding back to my cart on a normal basis while they were still on shelves.

I was surprised to see that Kellogg’s was keeping the brand going with Froot Loops Glazed Blueberry Donut Holes. It felt like a big leap to not only boost Glazed Donut Holes with the Froot Loops branding but to also do so in a way that feels pretty disconnected from what people expect from Froot Loops.

I don’t think I would’ve picked up this cereal without that Froot Loops crossover appeal, but like with most of the Glazed Donut Hole lineup, I’m happy to have tried this new addition once. The blueberry flavor shines through without tasting overtly fake or artificial. It’s not too sweet and delivers a good crunch. Froot Loops Glazed Berry Donut Holes work well as both a breakfast cereal and a snack.
