Enough of you wanted to see a bald Mark Wahlberg to give ‘Flight Risk’ a No. 1 opening

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Jan. 24-26, 2025.

1. Flight Risk

Weekend gross: $12M
Total domestic gross: $12M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Mel Gibson doesn’t direct many movies these days. His last film, 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, was nominated for a bunch of Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

That won’t be the case with Flight Risk.

The movie, which stars a weirdly bald Mark Wahlberg, opened with just $12 million this weekend. That poor debut was paired with a rotten score over at Rotten Tomatoes.

With the exception of The Passion of the Christ’s $83.8 million opening weekend back in 2004, Flight Risk’s first weekend was actually in line with the rest of Gibson’s films: Hacksaw Ridge ($15.2 million), Apocalypto ($15 million) and Braveheart ($12.9 million).

2. Mufasa: The Lion King

Weekend gross: $8.7M
Total domestic gross: $221.1M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 28

After Flight Risk, no other film broke the $10 million mark this weekend. That soft weekend allowed Mufasa: The Lion King to claim the No. 2 spot. The “live”-action prequel is still wildly behind Jon Favreau’s The Lion King. Through its sixth weekend in theaters, that film sat at $510.6 million in North America — more than double where Mufasa currently sits.
