I take one weekend off from this newsletter, and the box office goes wild. Zootopia 2 easily dethroned Wicked: For Good over the long Thanksgiving weekend, bringing in $96.8 million from Friday to Sunday and a whopping $156 million from Wednesday to Sunday.
While it’s difficult to do an accurate one-to-one comparison between Zootopia and its sequel since the original film opened on a normal weekend in March 2016, this is actually the second year in a row where Disney has blown away the competition over Thanksgiving weekend. Sure, Zootopia 2’s $156 five-day haul is impressive, but last year Moana 2 opened over that same span with $225.4 million in North America.

Wicked: For Good might have slipped to the No. 2 spot, but the sequel is currently outperforming its predecessor over the exact same span leading through Thanksgiving weekend.
At this point last year, director Jon M. Chu’s Wicked adaptation had already accumulated an impressive $263.2 million domestic box office haul. Wicked: For Good continues to defy Wicked’s box office pace at every turn, upping the previous film’s post-Thanksgiving haul by over $7 million.
