Vroom vroom. ‘F1’ races to a No. 1 opening for Brad Pitt
The heavily promoted movie lapped its opponents to give director Joseph Kosinski and Apple a big win.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of June 27-29, 2025.
1. F1
Weekend gross: $55.6M
Total domestic gross: $55.6M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
It’s been pretty much impossible to avoid the massive promotional push for F1 the past few weeks. I saw multiple billboards while traveling this weekend. The film was a major part of Apple’s WWDC earlier this month. (People also weren’t happy when Apple dumped an F1 promo into everyone’s Apple wallets.)
I guess it paid off for Apple Original Films, as F1 was victorious in its debut, taking the No. 1 spot with $55.6 million this weekend.
This was the second biggest opening weekend for Brad Pitt, with F1 slotting in between World War Z’s $66.4 million and Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s $50.3 million. F1 was also director Joseph Kosinski’s second biggest opener, landing way behind Top Gun: Maverick’s $126.7 million but ahead of Tron: Legacy’s $44 million.
It’s also funny that Apple occasionally promoted F1 as “F1: The Movie.” You know, to make sure no one confused it was actual F1 racing … or the function key on your keyboard.

2. How to Train Your Dragon
Weekend gross: $19.4M
Total domestic gross: $200.1M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 47
The How to Train Your Dragon do-over didn’t put up much of a fight against F1, but the remake did become the fifth film of 2025 to cross the $200 million milestone in North America, joining A Minecraft Movie ($423.9 million), Lilo & Stitch ($400.1 million), Sinners ($278 million) and Captain America: Brave New World ($200.5 million).
The updated How to Train Your Dragon movie has also passed all the second and third animated movies in the franchise domestically — How to Train Your Dragon landed at $177 million in 2014 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World finished at $160.8 million in 2019. The original How to Train Your Dragon’s $217.9 million domestic haul isn’t safe from the remake.
