The sophomore standout had to overcome a confusing Lorne Michaels moment and the chaos of ‘SNL50.’
SNL breakout star Ashley Padilla made her Late Night debut on Thursday, chatting with Seth Meyers on his show for the first time.
I love seeing SNL cast members hang out with Meyers. No matter how much he denies it, I firmly believe that Meyers is Lorne Michaels’ successor, and it seems like he truly loves SNL and cares about the people who are currently on the show.

For those of us who begged SNL to pull back on the celebrity cameos last season to let the actual cast have a shot, it’s affirming to hear Padilla talk about how she struggled to prove herself amidst the spotlight being firmly on SNL veterans. (Dana Carvey would. Not. Go. Home.) Thankfully SNL50 is in the past, and Padilla has been able to dominate this season of SNL.
SNL also posted a “look back” segment on the “Haircut” sketch from Glen Powell’s episode. Learning that the bit originated from Padilla’s pre-SNL time and her audition made a lot of sense.
The fact that Padilla made roughly three attempts to get the character on as a Weekend Update sketch only to have it keep getting cut also explained why she hasn’t been on Update often, despite delivering two knockout appearances: “Joann on JOANN Fabric and Crafts’ Bankruptcy” during Mikey Madison’s episode and “Two People Who Just Hooked Up Discuss the Government Shutdown” during Miles Teller’s episode.
