Hey there, The Omnicosm readers. I have some big news today: Deep SNL Thoughts is becoming The Cold Open.
When I spun Popculturology’s coverage of SNL into its own newsletter last year, I stuck with Deep SNL Thoughts as its brand, carrying over the name of my Saturday Night Live recaps for this standalone newsletter. But it never felt quite right.
First off, Deep SNL Thoughts doesn’t really roll off the tongue when you’re telling someone the name of the newsletter. And, while it was meant to pay homage to the iconic Jack Handey sketches on SNL, that led to the work I was doing getting buried in years — decades? — of Internet history about those very sketches.
So the era of The Cold Open begins today.

This past weekend’s episode of SNL hosted by Alexander Skarsgård was great. But it could’ve been even greater. The show posted “Epstein-Barr” online on Tuesday, revealing a cut-for-time sketch that featured Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost in an actual sketch.

If you’ve been a Popculturology reader for long enough, you’ve heard me begging Disney to show the Muppets some respect. One of the most iconic pop culture franchises, and the studio has yet to be able to figure out how to make it work in today’s world.
There was the ABC series that gave the Muppets The Office treatment. There was Jason Segel’s The Muppets, a movie I love but I understand isn’t universally accepted by fans of the characters. In a world where studios are desperate to find reliable and lucrative properties, why hadn’t Disney been able to make the Muppets work?
Well, it turns out, if you want to recapture the success of The Muppet Show, you just have to do The Muppet Show.

Valentine’s Day is just over a week away, which means it’s crunch time for hitting the seasonal aisle at CVS or Target. Sure, you can buy the biggest heart-shaped box of chocolates available, but if you’re looking for more options, Snackology is here to break down a whopping 18 different new and returning kinds of Valentine’s Day candy.
Seriously, I’ve covered all the bases. Chocolate. Sour stuff. Gummy bears. Even jellybeans. (Yes, I know it’s not Easter. I just go where the seasonal aisle takes me.) So throw that giant box of chocolate into your cart and use this roundup to find a few new favorites to go along with it.

In our grocery store, the Little Debbie items don’t have shelf space in an actual aisle. They sit on a display in the middle of the final aisle of frozen foods, perfectly positioned to not only grab your attention but to also take advantage of your mood as you push a full cart through the final stretches of your shopping trip.
Toss a package of Zebra Cakes into your cart, the display whispers. You’ve earned it.
Growing up, my family often visited the Hostess and Entenmann’s thrift stores. (I don’t think these places exist anymore, but imagine an entire store full of just cookies, cupcakes and those amazing coffeecakes covered in cinnamon crumbles.) But we also pretty much always had some kind of Little Debbie dessert on hand too, with the go-to favorites being Cosmic Brownies and Zebra Cakes. I don’t understand the economics of snack cakes in the 1990s, but if I wanted a Star Crunch, I had to go to a friend’s house and hope they’d offer me one.
When I saw that a line of Little Debbie Ice Cream Sandwiches were making their debut early this year, I knew I had to track them down. The glory of a Cosmic Brownie could only be improved upon by putting two of them on both sides of chocolate ice cream.

With the seasonal aisles ready to shift from Valentine’s Day to Easter at a moment’s notice, candy for the latter holiday is already slipping through the cracks. I’ve picked up a few things for a future Easter candy roundup already, but there was one find that stopped me in my tracks.
KFC Colonel’s Favorite Jellybeans.
Don’t do it, Bill, you’re possibly saying. Didn’t you learn your lesson from those Oreos that tasted like turkey?
You’d think I would’ve learned my lesson from the Oreo Thanksgiving Dinner Cookie Tin, but I’m a firm believer in the good journalism work that Snackology does. If I don’t buy and try — ugh — KFC Colonel’s Favorite Jellybeans, who will?
