Happy Oscar nominations day, everyone!

Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman revealed nominees in all 24 categories on Thursday morning. It was a historic day for Sinners, with Ryan Coogler’s film scoring a record 16 nominations, easily passing the previous record of 14 held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.

Before we dive into all the nominees, let’s all laugh at the Academy giving Avatar: Fire and Ash — a movie featuring fully CGI characters — a nomination for Costume Design ...

Michael B. Jordan in Sinners. / Warner Bros. Pictures

Picture

  • Bugonia
  • F1
  • Frankenstein
  • Hamnet
  • Marty Supreme
  • One Battle After Another
  • The Secret Agent
  • Sentimental Value
  • Sinners
  • Train Dreams

As always, I love that the Academy is sticking with ten nominees for Best Picture. I’m kind of surprised to see F1 in this mix, but I’m sure Apple is thrilled. Also interesting to see high-profile sequels like Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ash miss out on Best Picture nominations after their predecessors all earned that honor.

Ryan Coogler on the set of Sinners. / Warner Bros. Pictures

Director

  • Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another)
  • Ryan Coogler (Sinners)
  • Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme)
  • Sentimental Value (Joachim Trier)
  • Chloé Zhao (Hamnet)

Coogler earns his first Best Director nomination thanks to Sinners. (Does this make up for Coogler being snubbed for Black Panther?) He faces some stiff competition in this category, with Paul Thomas Anderson scoring his fourth Best Director nomination and Chloé Zhao earning her second after previously winning for Nomadland.

Emma Stone in Bugonia. / Focus Features

Actress

  • Jessie Buckley (Hamnet)
  • Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You)
  • Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue)
  • Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value)
  • Emma Stone (Bugonia)

This is Emma Stone’s third time being nominated for Best Actress, easily making her the veteran in a category where the other four nominees have never been nominated for this honor before.

Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme. / A24

Actor

  • Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another)
  • Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon)
  • Michael B. Jordan (Sinners)
  • Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent)

There’s a pretty good balance in the Best Actor category this year in terms of previous nominees and guys making their debut for the award. Timothée Chalamet (third time) and Leonardo DiCaprio (sixth time) have been here before, while Ethan Hawke has been twice nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Meanwhile, this is the first nomination overall for Michael B. Jordan and Wagner Moura.

Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another. / Warner Bros. Pictures

Supporting Actress

  • Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value)
  • Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value)
  • Amy Madigan (Weapons)
  • Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners)
  • Teyana Taylor (One Battle after Another)

Amy Madison is the only actress previously nominated for an Oscar in this year’s Supporting Actress category.

Delroy Lindo in Sinners. / Warner Bros. Pictures

Supporting Actor

  • Benicio del Toro (One Battle After Another)
  • Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein)
  • Delroy Lindo (Sinners)
  • Sean Penn (One Battle After Another)
  • Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value)

The Supporting Actor category probably has some of the best storylines for this year’s batch of Oscar nominees. Delroy Lindo earned his first nomination, while vets and One Battle After Another costars Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn face off.
