Hey there, Popculturology fans. Hopefully you’re recovering from eating way too much yesterday and are now having a relaxing Black Friday. If you’re like me, you’re old enough to remember when you used to have to actually go stand in line in front of, I dunno, a CompUSA super early in the morning in hopes of scoring a deal on a new eMachines computer and scanner.
While the Friday newsletter is off this week, I didn’t want today to pass by without commemorating that Nov. 28 is the anniversary of the release of the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Remember what it used to feel like to get excited about Star Wars by even an 88-second glimpse at a new movie?

Let’s jump back in time by a decade or so.
After George Lucas had seemingly closed out the Star Wars franchise’s days of theatrical releases, after Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith had brought the tale of Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the Dark Side and rise as Darth Vader to an end, Disney swooped in and bought Lucasfilm, quickly announcing that a new trilogy set after the original films was now in production.
By the time Black Friday 2014 rolled around, we knew that the first film in the trilogy would be titled Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it would be directed by JJ Abrams and returning Star Wars icons Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were going to be joined by a new generation of actors led by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver.
Then came the chatter that the first teaser was on the way. How? What would it show? There was still more than a year until The Force Awakens was set to hit theaters in December 2015.
