Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of May 1-3, 2026.

1. The Devil Wears Prada 2

Weekend gross: $77M
Total domestic gross: $77M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

The Devil Wears Prada 2 easily outperformed its predecessor this weekend, turning in a $77 million debut compared to The Devil Wears Prada’s $27.5 million opener from back in 2006.

There’s obviously inflation at play over that 20-year span, but The Devil Wears Prada hit the perfect combo of nostalgia and an effective promotional campaign. I’m actually surprised we didn’t see Anne Hathaway host SNL to close out Season 51.

2. Michael

Weekend gross: $54M
Total domestic gross: $183.8M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 44

Welp, I’ll admit that I was wrong last weekend when I suggested that Michael was playing like a concert film, and we’d see its second-weekend box office numbers tumble. The Michael Jackson biopic saw a respectable 44 percent drop from its $97.2 million opening weekend.

3. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Weekend gross: $12.1M
Total domestic gross: $402.7M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 41

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was the first movie to cross the $300 million mark in 2026. Now it’s also the first movie to hit $400 million this year.

4. Project Hail Mary

Weekend gross: $8.6M
Total domestic gross: $318.3M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 33

I’m still sticking by my theory that we’re going to see Project Hail Mary jump back above The Super Mario Galaxy Movie one of these weekends. Not in terms of total gross — the Mario sequel easily has that prize in the bag — but in terms of individual weekend grosses. The gap between the two films has been closing, with Project Hail Mary going from trailing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie by $7.7 million last weekend to trailing it by $3.5 million this weekend.

5. Hokum

Weekend gross: $6.4M
Total domestic gross: $6.4M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

The Adam Scott horror film cracked the top five during its opening weekend, grossing $6.4 million in North America.

Beyond the Top Five

  • Animal Farm: The Andy Serkis-directed adaptation of George Orwell’s novel has been widely mocked, from its ridiculous rap number to its fart jokes to the fact that no one involved seemed to have actually read and understood Animal Farm. Despite playing in 2,600 theaters, the adaptation grossed only $3.4 million its opening weekend.
  • Over Your Dead Body: Welp, we tried, Quaid Army, but the bottom has already fallen out for Over Your Dead Body. The film scaled back to a meager 650 screens this weekend and came away with a $160,000 second weekend.
