Programming note

The Box Office Report will be off next week.

1. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t

Weekend gross: $21.3M
Total domestic gross: $21.3M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t pulled of a magic trick of its own this weekend, scoring the franchise’s first No. 1 debut … while at the same time notching the lowest opener for the trilogy.

While Now You See Me opened with $29.4 million in May 2013, it did so at No. 2 behind Fast and Furious 6’s second weekend ($35.2 million). And when Now You See Me 2 opened in June 2016, its $22.4 million haul came in behind the debuts of The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist ($40.4 million) and Warcraft ($24.2 million).

But now Now You See Me: Now You Don’t (which should’ve been the title of the second film) was able to hold off The Running Man’s soft opening weekend to finally give Jesse Eisenberg and the rest of the Four Horsemen a box office victory.

2. The Running Man

Weekend gross: $17M
Total domestic gross: $17M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Despite the infectious charm of Glen Powell (who just turned in a fantastic episode of SNL), The Running Man only mustered up a moderate jog at the box office this weekend, with its $17 million debut trailing the third entry in the Now You See Me franchise.

It’s the third best opening weekend for Powell when he’s in a starring role, trailing the debuts of Top Gun: Maverick ($126.7 million) and Twisters ($81.3 million). For director Edgar Wright, the gap isn’t as extreme, with his take on The Running Man only opening slightly behind the $20.6 million that Baby Driver scored back in June 2017.
