Nerds Gummy Clusters Cherry Lemonade Blitz are a home run

Wait. No. That’s not the correct sports metaphor. Touchdown! Nerds Gummy Clusters Cherry Lemonade Blitz are a touchdown!

Nerds Gummy Clusters Cherry Lemonade Blitz are a home run

If you’re a longtime Snackology reader, you know that I’m a huge fan of Nerds Gummy Clusters. I was late to what’s arguably the biggest innovation in candy in the past decade, only finally getting on board with Nerds Gummy Clusters earlier this year, but I’m fully on board now.

Bill, you can’t be serious calling Nerds Gummy Clusters the “biggest innovation in candy in the past decade,” you’re saying to yourself.

I dunno, would The New York Times give a candy a full profile if that wasn’t the case?

For six months, a team of candy scientists and developers at the company’s headquarters in Chicago met almost every day on their quest to create a gummy core that could hold just enough mini Nerds to pack a perfect crunch. A previous Nerds product had been made in hopes of solving that issue — Nerds Rope, a long, gummy rope with Nerds stuck to it — but some had found it messy or difficult to eat.

Enter: Nerds Gummy Clusters.

The effort seems to have worked. In 2018, Nerds products brought in $40 million in sales. In the past calendar year, the company said, that number jumped to $800 million, a 20-fold increase in about six years. The company declined to specify its profits. The new product’s following also led to the first Super Bowl ad in Ferrara’s history, and the company said it planned to release a second Super Bowl ad in 2025.

I mean, Nerds Gummy Clusters are the real deal. (You better believe Snackology is ready to go when Nerds Juicy Gummy Clusters hit shelves at some point this year.) I didn’t hesitate to add Nerds Gummy Clusters Cherry Lemonade Blitz to my cart when I found them at Target last weekend.

What they cost

I bought an 8 oz. bag of Nerds Gummy Clusters Cherry Lemonade Blitz for $4.19 at Target.

My thoughts

This is, by my count, the ninth variety of Nerds Gummy Clusters to be released. You have the standard two flavors (Rainbow and Very Berry), two football-related flavors from last fall (Berry Punch Rush and Grape Strawberry Blitz) and then four seasonal flavors (Spooky, Frosty, Valentine and Hoppin’).

Cherry Lemonade Blitz is this year’s football-related flavor, replacing the duo of Berry Punch Rush and Grape Berry Blitz. Unlike the seasonal flavors, this one is pretty self-explanatory — those tiny nerds surrounding the gummy center are, well, cherry and lemonade. (This is strangely the second cherry/lemon(ade) item that I’ve covered at Snackology this month, following Mountain Dew Zero Sugar x Trolli Cherry Lemon.)

Nerds Gummy Clusters Cherry Lemonade Blitz actually pack a bit less of a punch than I expected something lemonade-flavored to offer.

Snack score

🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 (5 out of 5 cookies)

I honestly don’t know if there’s a flavor of Nerds Gummy Clusters that I wouldn’t give a perfect score. I love this candy. One of these days I’m gonna stockpile enough different flavors and dump them into a giant bowl together.
