It was a super weekend for the launch of the DCU. James Gunn’s Superman soared to a $122 million debut, firmly putting Warner Bros.’ rebooted superhero cinematic universe on the right track.
Superman scored the second biggest opening weekend for the character, trailing only Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s $166 million debut in 2016. With the shockingly not-British David Corenswet in the title role, Superman outdid the box office debuts of Henry Cavill (Man of Steel’s $116.6 million) and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns’ $52.5 million).
Gunn also landed the second biggest opening weekend of his directorial career with Superman. The film debuted between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s $146.5 million and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $118.4 million.
We’ll have to wait until next June to see if Supergirl can play off the success of Superman and keep the DCU’s early success going.

Through its second weekend in theaters, Jurassic World Rebirth has already outgrossed The Lost World: Jurassic Park ($229.1 million) and Jurassic Park III ($181.2 million) in North America.
Among the recent Jurassic World movies, though, Rebirth is trailing its three predecessors on a weekend-to-weekend basis. While its $232.1 million domestic haul is great, Jurassic World grossed $106.6 million its second weekend for a total of $402.8 million through two weekends. (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had $265.7 million and Jurassic World: Dominion had $250.3 million at this point.) A $231.1 million domestic gross is still good enough to make Rebirth the fifth biggest haul of 2025, less than $8 million behind How to Train Your Dragon.
