The Monthly September 2025
Three things to know. Two trailers to watch. One article to read. Here’s what you need to know for this month.
After more than two decades as the biggest domestic anime release, ‘Pokémon: The Movie’ gets bumped down a spot.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Sept. 19-21, 2025.
Weekend gross: $17.3M
Total domestic gross: $104.7M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 75
A weekend-to-weekend drop of 75 percent would normally be catastrophic for a major release, but in the case of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, Sony and Crunchyroll probably don’t mind.
Thanks to the film’s $70.6 million debut last weekend, Infinity Castle has sailed past the $100 million mark in North America and has claimed the title of the top grossing anime film in domestic history — a title that belonged to Pokémon: The First Movie ($85.7 million) since 1999.
Weekend gross: $13.5M
Total domestic gross: $13.5M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
The marketing for Him seems to be OK with people thinking that it‘s a Jordan Peele movie. Yes, he produced it through his Monkeypaw company, but Peele wasn’t behind the camera for this one. (The 29 percent critics score over at Rotten Tomatoes should be a sign that this isn’t a Peele film.)
Universal’s reliance on Peele’s name in the promotion for Him failed to pay off, with the football-themed film’s $13.5 million opening weekend lagging way behind the debuts of Peele’s Us ($71.1 million), Nope ($44.4 million) and Get Out ($33.4 million).
