Chris Pratt shows ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ no ‘Mercy’
I could’ve written a much better headline about this movie if it had starred John Stamos instead.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Jan. 23-25, 2026.
Weekend gross: $11.1M
Total domestic gross: $11.1M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
A huge winter storm hitting a large chunk of the country this weekend meant people stayed home instead of going to the movies. While I’m not sure folks would’ve been flocking to theaters in order to watch Chris Pratt’s AI-heavy take on Minority Report even without a storm, Mercy probably would’ve made more than the $11.1 million that it opened with this weekend.
As debuts go, Pratt has obviously seen bigger. The man loves a franchise, and has three of the seven biggest opening weekends to show for it. (Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million, Avengers: Infinity War’s $257.7 million and Jurassic World’s $208.8 million.) Mercy is a blip for Pratt, falling behind even the $14.9 million that Passengers opened with back in 2016.

Things have been tracking downward for weeks now when it comes to Avatar: Fire and Ash performing at the level of the first two Avatar movies, so I don’t think the winter storm can be fully blamed for the film failing to notch a $10 million weekend over just Fire and Ash’s sixth frame in theaters. Avatar: The Way of Water didn’t fall below the $10 million mark until its ninth weekend in theaters while it took until Weekend 12 for the original Avatar to fail to gross at least $10 million.
