Anime ‘Demon Slayer’ sequel scores shocking $70M weekend

1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle

A $70 million opening weekend was not what people expected for the latest Demon Slayer sequel. The anime movie, well, slayed the competition, topping the $31 million that Pokémon: The Movie debuted with way back in 1999.

“We can easily call this a surprise hit,” Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, told CNN.

When it comes to Demon Slayer movies, Infinity Castle also blew away the franchise’s previous North American debuts, easily blowing past the $21.1 million that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train opened with in 2021.

2. The Conjuring: Last Rites

Weekend gross: $26.1M
Total domestic gross: $131.1M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 69

Despite the title of the most recent movie in the Conjuring Universe franchise promising that this one was offering Last Rites, this one’s performance is going to keep the franchise alive.

The Conjuring: Last Rites has passed the domestic gross of every movie in this franchise — whether it was a Conjuring, an Annabelle, a Nun or even a Curse of La Llorona — except for the original The Conjuring, which totaled out with $137.4 million back in 2013.
