‘Thunderbolts*’ holds better than other recent MCU movies while ‘Sinners’ passes $200M
The latest MCU movie dropped a respectable 55 percent from last weekend — much better than ‘Quantumania,’ ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Brave New World.’

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of May 9-11, 2025.
1. Thunderbolts*
Weekend gross: $33.1M
Total domestic gross: $128.5M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 55
Is Thunderbolts* lighting the box office on fire? Not exactly. The latest MCU movie easily cleared the $100 million mark its second weekend in theaters, but that milestone used to be a foregone conclusion for the franchise’s films during their opening weekends.
Thunderbolts* does seem to be holding much better than several recent MCU movies, though. Its 55 percent drop from last weekend has to be a performance Marvel Studios is happy with after it saw Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania fall 70 percent, The Marvels fall 78 percent and Captain America: Brave New World fall 68 percent from their first to second weekends. Maybe that spoiler about the film’s title helped lure people into theaters this weekend?

2. Sinners
Weekend gross: $21.1M
Total domestic gross: $214.4M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 36
Sinners now sits at No. 2 on the domestic box office chart for 2025, crossing the $200 million mark in its fourth weekend in theaters. Where are all those articles whining about Sinners technically being a box office flop or whatever now?
It’s pretty impressive how director Ryan Coogler’s masterpiece has refused to give up much ground at the box office. After falling only five percent from its opening weekends to its second weekend, Sinners has posted week-to-week drops of 28 percent and 36 percent — amazingly small decreases for a film playing at this level.
