Pop-Tarts Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough make their long-awaited return

With the announcement of the updated roster of mascots for the upcoming Pop-Tarts Bowl (there’s a BUFF mascot now!), it seemed like the right time to finally dive into the box of Pop-Tarts Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough that I snagged while traveling for Thanksgiving.
While I don’t remember previously buying and/or eating the Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Pop-Tarts during their previous run, I was very much aware of the esteemed spot they hold among loyal Pop-Tart fans.
“Where the [bleep] are the chocolate chip pop tarts,” read the title of one Reddit post that I came across while researching the lore around Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pop-Tarts. (Yes, I do research for this newsletter. This is a very, very serious hobby.) “I am so [bleeping] desperate,” that Reddit post continues. “My favorite pop tart in the world is chocolate chip. I’ve been eating them for 10+ years, to the point to where even my mom tells friends that my favorite food is chocolate chip pop tarts. While I do tolerate others, chocolate chip is my life.”
Chocolate chip is my life.
Well, hopefully this person knows that things are about to turn around, with Pop-Tarts announcing in October that the mythic cookie dough flavor was returning to shelves after disappearing three years ago. And even better? They’re back for good.
“This is not a drill! After years of fan pleas, the #1 most requested flavor across Pop-Tarts social channels, Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, is officially returning to shelves this November,” Pop-Tarts declared. “And this time, it's here to stay!”
I had my eye out for Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pop-Tarts for the past month or so, finally getting them from Walmart while I was in Rochester for Thanksgiving. (Thanks, Mom, for that Walmart+ order.) Would this flavor — a flavor that had people declaring that they were desperate for its return — live up to the hype?

An 8-count box of Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pop-Tarts is currently available on Walmart’s website for $2.62.

I’m pretty sure I’ve brought this up in a previous chat about Pop-Tarts, but I find most new flavors of the classic toaster pastries to land closer to the “miss” end on the hit-or-miss scale.
Give me a reliable flavor like Frosted Strawberry or S’mores any day, but Frosted Marshmallow Hot Cocoa or Girl Scout cookies? Odds are those versions of Pop-Tarts aren’t going to have enough filling in them to not get overpowered by the actual pastry itself. (Why do you think Presto Pizza, Kellogg’s’ attempt at applying the Pop-Tarts treatment to pizza, didn’t work?) So this was my fear opening up the box of Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pop-Tarts.
My hopes were lifted after tearing open the silvery foil wrapping that stood between me and a duo of a Pop-Tarts flavor that social media had willed back to life. The chocolate frosting instantly invoked one of my favorite parts of a S’mores Pop-Tart. If they got that right, could they have gotten the filling right too?

The box might show a Pop-Tart filled with cookie dough that’s bursting with chocolate chips, but my initial break dampened my hopes. Where were the chocolate chips?
Thankfully, there were a ton of chocolate chips buried on both sides of this particular Pop-Tart. They had escaped my camera ... but they wouldn’t escape my immediate love for this Pop-Tart flavor as I wolfed down the two halves.

The Internet was right. Social media was right. Pop-Tarts absolutely needed to bring Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough back from wherever it is they keep retired flavors.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to eat another one of these fantastic Pop-Tarts while I research which team of Edible Mascots I should root for at the Pop-Tarts Bowl? Team Sprinkles or Team Swirls? The former has Protein Slammin’ Strawberry, a “ripped powerhouse mascot with muscles to match its mighty protein-boosted flavor,” but Team Swirls has Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
