I very much wanted to see *Supergirl* succeed. The trailers for the film had me psyched. The tease of Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El at the end of *Superman* carried a ton of promise, especially for fans of *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow*, the comics that this film was based upon. Here’s where the problems start to pile up. While *Woman of Tomorrow* was full of wonder, with bright colors and a sense of awe, the movie *Supergirl* swapped all of that joy out — there’s a flying horse in the comics! — for a central plot about young women being kidnapped to help the villain’s all-male species breed. First off, I have no idea how an all-male species exists. And second, WHAT. WHY. HOW. Who possibly could have thought this was a smart move? The trailers looked great. The vibes coming off James Gunn’s *Superman* were positive. But when the movie premiered this week, it turns out something went very wrong with the second installment of the DCU. Milly Alcock did everything she could with an adaptation that seemingly misread the ending of its source material. *Superman*’s box office debut of $125 million last summer was a good start for the fledgling DCU. *Supergirl*’s $38 million follow-up just sucked the air out of things.
