Hello! Welcome to **The** **Box Office Report** for the weekend of April 28-30, 2023.

## 1\. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

**Weekend gross:* $40M*
**Total domestic gross:* $490M*
**Last weekend:* 1st*
**Percent drop:* \-33*

*The Super Mario Bros. Movie* became the 50th film in box office history to cross the $1 billion barrier, adding $40 million domestically to boost its score to $1,022,474,000.

Nintendo’s adaption of its iconic video game franchise took full advantage of its April release window, landing the No. 1 spot on the domestic box office chart for four weekends in a row. The **Chris Pratt**\-led *Super Mario Bros. Movie* will see its run come to an end next weekend, when the Chris Pratt-led *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3* opens.

On its way to grossing $1 billion worldwide, *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* has racked up $490 million at the domestic box office, which makes it the 19th highest grossing film in North American history. The film is less than $10 million away from cracking the $500 million barrier, which is still an impressive feat despite the amount of movies that have hit that number over the past decade or so. (Here’s a wild one: When *The Dark Knight* grossed $535 million in 2008, it was only the second film after *Titanic* to cross $500 million.)

## 2\. Evil Dead Rise

**Weekend gross:* $12.2M*
**Total domestic gross:* $44.4M*
**Last weekend:* 2nd*
**Percent drop:* \-50*

*Evil Dead Rise* has quickly become the No. 2 film in the franchise on both the domestic and worldwide box office charts. In a weekend or two, *Evil Dead Rise* should overtake 2013’s *Evil Dead* for the top spot on both charts.

## 3\. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

**Weekend gross:* $6.8M*
**Total domestic gross:* $6.8M*
**Last weekend:* New release*
**Percent drop:* NA*

The long-awaited adaption of **Judy Blume**’s novel of the same name was a hit with critics (a 99 percent score on *Rotten Tomatoes*), but the film brought in just $6.8 million its opening weekend. Hopefully positive word of mouth (*Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.* has an A on CinemaScore) can draw in new and repeat viewers over the next few weeks.

## 4\. John Wick: Chapter 4

**Weekend gross:* $5M*
**Total domestic gross:* $176.2M*
**Last weekend:* 4th*
**Percent drop:* \-14*

*John Wick: Chapter 4* did it! The fourth film in the franchise is now both the highest grossing installment on both the domestic and worldwide charts. In fact, *John Wick: Chapter 4* needs just a bit over $30 million more to become the first *John Wick* film to crack $400 million.

## 5\. Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi

**Weekend gross:* $4.7M*
**Total domestic gross:* $313.8M*
**Last weekend:* NA*
**Percent drop:* NA*

Hey, have you all heard of this movie called *Return of the Jedi*? It’s apparently the conclusion to some trilogy about stars and wars …

## Next weekend

It’s a Marvel Cinematic Universe weekend. *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3* hits theaters on Thursday. Will a wave of positive reviews of **James Gunn**’s final MCU movie be enough to push the third *Guardians* film beyond its earlier tracking numbers?
