Happy belated Global Taco Day!

I’m sorry that **Snackology** missed the worldwide celebration yesterday — I assume there was a parade of some sort — but the newsletter is here today to make up for my tardiness.

What better way to celebrate Global Taco Day than with Taco Bell? The fast-food chain has teamed up with Duolingo to release **Duo Habanero Sauce** and the **Duo’s Usual** combo.

“National Taco Day is about more than just food. It’s about the shared love of tacos and the connections they create between people. This year, we’re taking that love global,” Luis Restrepo, chief marketing officer at Taco Bell, [said in the company’s announcement of these new menu offerings](https://www.tacobell.com/newsroom/taco-bell-and-duolingo-take-national-taco-day-global?ref=theomnicosm.com). “The fact that ‘taco’ is understood in more than 30 languages proves just how universal it is, and together with Duolingo, we’re turning that shared language into an invitation for even more fans to join the Global Taco Day celebration.”

The chain says that the Taco Bell x Duolingo sauce is “bright and tangy with fruity notes and a kick of habanero heat.” It’s included in Duo’s Usual, a combo that comes with a Doritos Locos Taco, a seasoned beef soft taco, Cinnamon Twists and a medium fountain drink.

As someone who took Spanish through tenth grade, and has since forgotten pretty much all of it, I appreciate that “taco” is “taco” in almost any language. I’m ready to eat a few to put Duo Habanero Sauce and Duo’s Usual to the test.

### What it costs

Beginning Oct. 6, every Doritos Locos Taco comes with a packet of Duo Habanero Sauce. When Taco Bell first announced this new sauce, the restaurant said that you would be able to buy additional packets for **20 cents each**, but that à la carte option didn’t show up for me in the Taco Bell app.

Duo’s Usual is just **$4**, which seems like a great deal for a satisfactory Taco Bell meal.

### My thoughts

While Taco Bell has spent years crafting and promoting its complex boxes and combos — they even have [a Name Your Price Tool](https://www.tacobell.com/promotions/name-your-price?ref=theomnicosm.com) to help you maximize the menu — Duo’s Usual is a throwback to a simpler time.

This combo is what I would’ve probably ordered back in high school in the years before I discovered the glory of the Crunchwrap, chalupas or even the fancier burritos. In my defense, I don’t think Taco Bell had even invented some of these menu items back then. The Crunchwrap Supreme didn’t even become a full-time menu item until 2006, and the Doritos Locos Taco didn’t debut until early 2012.

When I tell you that the Doritos Locos Taco didn’t go live until almost four years after I graduated from college, you’ll understand how long I’ve been chasing ridiculous fast-food menu items.

The Doritos Locos Taco is arguably the beginning of the modern age of Taco Bell. It’s easy to forget over a decade later how revolutionary the collaboration was at the time. [It took years to develop](https://www.fastcompany.com/3008346/deep-inside-taco-bells-doritos-locos-taco?ref=theomnicosm.com), and now it’s been around for so long, Taco Bell has released and discontinued Cool Ranch and Fiery variants.

The seasoned beef soft taco is the cornerstone of the Taco Bell menu. It was what my dad, brothers and I used to order when we had dinner at the mall food court as a family. (My mom and sister were not Taco Bell people then.) We used to buy several of the combos that came with three soft tacos, skipping the lettuce. Super basic stuff.

If I’m having Taco Bell delivered, I’ll always go with a soft taco over a hard one. I was honestly shocked that the hard-shelled Doritos Locos Taco in my Duo’s Usual arrived intact.

I can’t tell you how many times we pulled away from the Taco Bell drive-thru during my college years only to be disappointed that they had forgotten to put my order of Cinnamon Twists into the bag. I knew it was going to happen, but I kept ordering them anyway.

Who doesn’t love Cinnamon Twists? They’re the perfect companion to Taco Bell’s core menu of meat-and-cheese-forward items. I appreciate that Duo included them in his combo.

Speaking of Duo, my Duo’s Usual came with a single packet of Duo Habanero. The packets feature “taco-inspired sayings across nine languages, including English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese, German, Korean, Mandarin and Japanese.” My packet said “‘Taco’ needs no translation,” a point the Taco Bell executive team already made clear earlier in this review.

With only one packet of Duo Habanero sauce in my possession, I used it sparingly on my Doritos Locos Taco and soft taco. (Was I supposed to put on the Cinnamon Twists too?)

As advertised, Duo Habanero sauce is fruity, and in the spots where I got a big enough bit of it, the heat snuck through. I would love to get my hands on a larger quantity of Duo Habanero sauce so that I can really dial up that heat.

The Taco Bell x Duo plushie. / Taco Bell

Duo’s Usual is a cost-effective way to buy a modest amount of Taco Bell food. Let’s be honest, every Taco Bell trip doesn’t need to include multiple chalupas, a side burrito and an order of Nacho Fries. Sometimes two tacos and a sweet snack are all you need.

You know what else I need? One of the Taco Bell x Duo plushies. There are only 1,000 of them available globally, and I had to enter to win one through the Taco Bell app on Tuesday.
