**Update:* It’s a record! When the actual box office numbers came in on Monday, it turned out* Spider-Man: Brand New Day *had set a new opening weekend record. Its whopping $360 million debut beat* Avengers: Endgame*’s previous record of $357.1 million.*

Hello! Welcome to **The** **Box Office Report** for the weekend of July 31-Aug. 2, 2026\.

## 1\. Spider-Man: Brand New Day

*Weekend gross: *$355M**
*Total domestic gross: *$355M**
*Last weekend: *New release**
*Percent drop: *NA**

Well, that escalated quickly. *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* went from tracking in the high-$100M range to the low- to mid-$200M range to becoming only the second film to ever crack $300 million over its opening weekend — and come within $2 million of snagging the title of biggest opening weekend from *Avengers: Endgame*.

As *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, [the best live-action Spider-Man movie since *Spider-Man 2*](https://www.theomnicosm.com/popculturology-newsletter-spider-man-brand-new-day/), stormed into theaters starting with Thursday previews, it quickly became clear that the combo of wildly enthusiastic reviews and the reality that Spider-Man remains one of the safest bets we still have in the box office world, were shooting **Tom Holland**’s fourth standalone Spidey film to wild heights.

I’ve long assumed that two domestic box office records were safe: *Endgame*’s $357.1 million opening weekend and *Star Wars: The Force Awakens*’s $936.7 million total. Both of those records were the results of such specific factors — pent-up demand, the conclusion or start of a new saga, where holidays fell in relation to their release dates — I wasn’t sure any film had a shot at toppling them.

Writing this edition of **The Box Office Report** before we get final numbers on Monday, I’m not even sure that **Brand New Day** didn’t topple the opening day record. If I’m Sony and the numbers for this film are on the fence in terms of beating *Endgame*, I play it safe and don’t declare victory with estimated Sunday totals only to be faced with the reality that *Brand New Day* fell short on Monday. [*Deadline* reports](https://deadline.com/2026/08/box-office-spider-man-brand-new-day-1237014268/?ref=theomnicosm.com) that some studios believe that *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* will actually settle between $358 million and $360 million.

A very awkward consequence of *Brand New Day*’s estimated $355 million opening weekend is that director **Destin Daniel Cretton** has joined (and possibly surprised) *Endgame* directors **Joe Russo** and **Anthony Russo** as the only folks to helm a movie that opened above $300 million ... and while Marvel handed [the keys to *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars*](https://www.theomnicosm.com/inevitable-marvel-studios-turns-to-the-russo-brothers-for-next-two-avengers-films/) to the Russo brothers, the studio has yet to greenlight a sequel to Cretton’s *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings* andit just canceled the second season of his *Wonder Man* Disney+ series.

## 2\. The Odyssey

*Weekend gross: *$51M**
*Total domestic gross: *$395.5M**
*Last weekend: *1st**
*Percent drop: *43**

After two weekends of making its own box office history as the No. 1 movie in North America, *The Odyssey* slipped to No. 2 this weekend. Not only does **Christopher Nolan**’s latest film now sit at No. 3 on the 2026 domestic chart, passing *Project Hail Mary* ($344.1 million) and *Michael* ($373.3 million), *The Odyssey* is easily closing in on the $400 million mark.

*The Odyssey* is already Nolan’s biggest non-Batman film in North America, and it has a very good shot at passing *The Dark Knight Rises* ($448.1 million) before facing the daunting task of outgrossing *The Dark Knight* at $536.6 million.

## 3\. Toy Story 5

*Weekend gross: *$6.3M**
*Total domestic gross: *$461.7M**
*Last weekend: *4th**
*Percent drop: *38**

You’ll notice that *Toy Story 5* and *Minions & Monsters* both shifted up a place from last weekend. The animated duo were able to pull off this task thanks to decent weekend-to-weekend drops — in *Toy Story 5*’s case, only 38 percent — while the live-action *Moana* remake lost 50 percent of its business from last weekend and fell to No. 5.

Does *Toy Story 5* have the box office juice to catch up to *Finding Dory*’s $486.3 million and claim the No. 3 spot on Pixar’s all-time domestic box office chart?

## 4\. Minions & Monsters

*Weekend gross: *$5.8M**
*Total domestic gross: *$168.4M**
*Last weekend: *5th**
*Percent drop: *41**

It still looks like *Minions & Monsters* is going to stall out before hitting the $200 million mark, which would make it the first *Despicable Me*/*Minions* film to fail to do so in North America.

## 5\. Live-action Moana remake

*Weekend gross: *$5.3M**
*Total domestic gross: *$114.8M**
*Last weekend: *2nd**
*Percent drop: *50**

Let’s pretend there were creative reasons to have released a live-action *Moana* remake. That there was artistic value to **Dwayne Johnson** slipping on that wig that somehow made him look balder than he already is. Even if that was the case, Disney sent this film to die by releasing it between *Toy Story 5* and *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*. That was such a small window for the redo to make money, and after it absolutely bombed its opening weekend, it was over for sure.
