Hello! Welcome to **The** **Box Office Report** for the weekend of June 5-7, 2026.

## 1\. Scary Movie

*Weekend gross: *$55M**
*Total domestic gross: *$55M**
*Last weekend: *New release**
*Percent drop: *NA**

It’s been 26 years since my parents didn’t let me see the original *Scary Movie* in theaters. I skipped the latest installment in the franchise too, but the film didn’t need me to score the biggest opening weekend for the series.

With the Wayans family back on board for the first time since 2001’s *Scary Movie 2*, this *Scary Movie* (I’m begging studios to stop reusing titles when they’re not actually rebooting a series) opened with a $55 million weekend, beating the previous franchise high of $48.1 million set by *Scary Movie 3* in 2003.

## 2\. Masters of the Universe

*Weekend gross: *$29.3M**
*Total domestic gross: *$29.3M**
*Last weekend: *New release**
*Percent drop: *NA**

I feel bad for *Masters of the Universe*. The film has gotten decent reviews, currently sitting at 67 percent on *Rotten Tomatoes*. The folks involved seem to have really put their hearts into the project. But a $29.3 million opening weekend isn’t going to turn this film into a hit.

*Masters of the Universe* is the best opening weekend for director **Travis Knight**, topping *Bumblebee*’s $21.7 million and *Kubo and the Two Strings*’s $12.6 million. But turning the nostalgic toy line and animated series into a feature film could have been Knight’s chance to break through to the next level of success.

## 3\. Backrooms

*Weekend gross: *$25.9M**
*Total domestic gross: *$135.1M**
*Last weekend: *1st**
*Percent drop: *68**

Normally a 68 percent drop after a film’s opening weekend would be a sign for concern, but I can’t imagine that A24 is too worried about *Backrooms*. The horror film became the studio’s first film to hit the $100 million mark in North America, easily breezing past that milestone before the weekend even began.

## 4\. Obsession

*Weekend gross: *$25.6M**
*Total domestic gross: *$152.1M**
*Last weekend: *2nd**
*Percent drop: *7**

That’s three straight weekends of *Obsession* grossing at least $20 million. That trend is even wilder when you remember that the **Curry Barker** film grossed $17.2 million its opening weekend and didn’t begin this streak until its second weekend in theaters.

*Obsession* has now turned in weekend-to-weekend changes of a 39 percent increase, a 14 percent increase and a seven percent decrease.

## 5\. The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act

*Weekend gross: *$12.4M**
*Total domestic gross: *$20.8M**
*Last weekend: *New release**
*Percent drop: *NA**

*The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act* snuck in an $8.4 million Thursday before the weekend hit.

## Beyond the Top Five

- ***The Mandalorian and Grogu*:** In only its third weekend in theaters, *The Mandalorian and Grogu* is an afterthought with an estimated $10 million. It barely exists in the minds of moviegoers. Falling out of the top five in Weekend 3 is unprecedented for a *Star Wars* movie. Here’s how the franchise has performed beginning with the prequel trilogy:
  - *The Phantom Menace*: In top five until Weekend 7
  - *Attack of the Clones*: In the top five until Weekend 6
  - *Revenge of the Sith*: In the top five until Weekend 6
  - *The Force Awakens*: In the top five until Weekend 9
  - *The Last Jedi*: In the top five until Weekend 5
  - *The Rise of Skywalker*: In the top five until Weekend 6
  - *Rogue One*: In the top five until Weekend 6
  - *Solo*: In the top five until Weekend 5
- ***The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*:** The latest animated *Mario* movie became the first film released in 2026 to crack the $1 billion worldwide mark.
