Hello! Welcome to **The** **Box Office Report** for the weekend of April 24-26, 2026.

## 1\. Michael

*Weekend gross: *$97M**
*Total domestic gross: *$97M**
*Last weekend: *New release**
*Percent drop: *NA**

So, um ... yeah. *Michael*, the **Michael Jackson** biopic that both due to creative choices and [legal restraints](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/michael-director-producer-paid-millions-reshoots-cut-abuse-1236577257/?ref=theomnicosm.com), failed to address \*waves arms\* pretty much anything negative about the late pop star, including those pesky allegations of abuse, opened with a massive $97 million first weekend.

That’s by far the biggest opening weekend for a music biopic ever, easily dethroning *Straight Outta Compton* ($60.1 million) and *Bohemian Rhapsody* ($55 million).

*Michael*’s $97 million domestic haul is the second biggest weekend of 2026, trailing only *The Super Mario Galaxy* movie ($131.7 million) and coming in ahead of *Project Hail Mary* ($80.5 million). We all gotta make our choices and set our own moral codes in life, but it’s wild that this biopic almost cracked a $100 million weekend.

I do wonder what kind of drop *Michael* will see next weekend. Did this one play like a concert film? Or will it have actual legs to make good on that $97 million opening weekend?

- 📖 [**How Did We End Up With *Michael*?**](https://www.vulture.com/article/how-did-we-end-up-with-michael-our-critics-discuss.html?ref=theomnicosm.com) *(Craig Jenkins, Jasmine Vojdani and Alison Willmore, Vulture)*: “When you watch the movie, you’re very aware of the fact that what this is is IP. It’s this thing that is being managed and finessed for the greatest possible continued value. There’s no real desire to do justice to this person’s life.”

## 2\. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

*Weekend gross: *$21.2M**
*Total domestic gross: *$386.5M**
*Last weekend: *1st**
*Percent drop: *42**

After three weekends at No. 1, *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie* slipped to No. 2\. The animated sequel fell a respectable 42 percent from last weekend. It’s within striking distance of the $400 million mark — an achievement that *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* had already hit by the end of its third weekend in theaters.

## 3\. Project Hail Mary

*Weekend gross: *$13.2M**
*Total domestic gross: *$305.4M**
*Last weekend: *2nd**
*Percent drop: *36**

After six weekends in theaters, *Project Hail Mary* ticked down to the No. 3 slot. With just a 36 percent decrease from last weekend, the adaptation added $13.2 million to its domestic haul, pushing the film past the $300 million mark.

Looking at the trajectories for both *Project Hail Mary* and *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, I wouldn’t be shocked if **Ryan Gosling**’s latest film winds up outgrossing *Mario* one of these upcoming weekends.

## 4\. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

*Weekend gross: *$5.6M**
*Total domestic gross: *$23.5M**
*Last weekend: *3rd**
*Percent drop: *58**

Sorry, **Lee Cronin**, but *Lee Cronin’s The Mummy* fell a scary 58 percent from its opening weekend, adding only $5.6 million to its domestic total.

## 5\. The Drama

*Weekend gross: *$2.6M**
*Total domestic gross: *$44.8M**
*Last weekend: *4th**
*Percent drop: *46**

There wasn’t much drama over whether or not *The Drama* would snag the No. 5 spot. While *Hoppers* ($1.9 million), *You, Me & Tuscany* ($1.5 million), *Over Your Dead Body* ($1.495 million) and *Mother Mary* ($1.3 million) all clumped in the $1 million range, the **Zendaya**/**Robert Pattinson** film had the $2 million range all to itself.

## Beyond the Top Five

- ***Over Your Dead Body*:** Quaid Army! The **Jorma Taccone**\-directed film opened with $1.495 million across 1,550 theaters this past weekend. *Over Your Dead Body*, which stars **Jason Segel**, **Samara Weaving**, **Timothy Olyphant** and **Juliette Lewis**, will hopefully keep seeing that quump thanks to *The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast*.

*Box office numbers via The Numbers* *and Box Office* Mojo *based on Sunday estimates.*
