Happy Oscar nominations day! **Riz Ahmed** and **Allison Williams** announced the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards this morning, revealing who made the cut for this year’s Oscars — and who we get to complain about on Twitter.

The fantastic *Everything Everywhere All at Once* was the morning’s most prolific nominee, with 11 nominations including honors in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Let’s go through the nominations on other side of this break …

## Best Picture

- *All Quiet on the Western Front*
- *Avatar: The Way of Water*
- *The Banshees of Inisherin*
- *Elvis*
- *Everything Everywhere All at Once*
- *The Fabelmans*
- *Tár*
- *Top Gun: Maverick*
- *Triangle of Sadness*
- *Women Talking*

I love seeing the ten-movie Best Picture field. After shifting to a five-to-ten system for the number of movies that could score a Best Picture nomination, the Academy returned to a solid ten beginning last year. A field this big allows a great mix of films to make the cut, whether it’s *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, a foreign film like *All Quiet on the Western Front* or two of the biggest box office hits in movie history like *Avatar: The Way of Water* and *Top Gun: Maverick*.

Speaking of those two films, *The Way of Water* and *Maverick* become the rare sequels to get Best Picture nominations. Have we ever had two sequels score Best Picture noms in the same year? *(*[*Update: Yup, that’s a record.*](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2023/01/awards-insider-oscar-nominations-sequels?utm%5Fsocial-type=owned&utm%5Fmedium=social&utm%5Fbrand=vf&utm%5Fsource=twitter&mbid=social%5Ftwitter)*)*

I thought we’d see *Glass Onion*, *The Whale* or even possibly *Black Panther: Wakanda Forever* sneak into the Best Picture slate.

Gotta step up my work on this category, as I’ve seen only four of the ten nominees.

****Cate Blanchett** in **Tár*. / Focus Features

## Best Director

- Todd Field (*Tár*)
- Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (*Everything Everywhere All at Once*)
- Martin McDonagh (*The Banshees of Inisherin*)
- Ruben Östlund (*Triangle of Sadness*)
- Steven Spielberg (*The Fabelmans*)

Once again, the Academy fails to nominate a woman in the Best Director category. There were some predictions that had *The Woman King*’s **Gina Price Bythewood** cracking this category. Best Picture nominee *Women Talking* was directed by **Sarah Polley**.

Besides **Steven Spielberg**, though, we did get four first-time nominees in this category. (Well, five if you count **Daniel Kwan** and **Daniel Scheinert**.) Meanwhile, this is Spielberg’s ninth nomination for Best Director, previously winning for *Schindler’s List* and *Saving Private Ryan*.

****Ana de Armas** in **Blonde*. / Netflix

## Best Actress

- Cate Blanchett (*Tár*)
- Ana de Armas (*Blonde*)
- Andrea Riseborough (*To Leslie*)
- Michelle Williams (*The Fabelmans*)
- Michelle Yeoh (*Everything Everywhere All at Once*)

Two big snubs in the Best Actress category: **Viola Davis** for *The Woman King* and **Danielle Deadwyer** for *Till*.

This is **Cate Blanchett**’s fifth nomination for Best Actress, going winless in the previous four times featured in this category.

****Brandan Fraser** in **The Whale*. / A24

## Best Actor

- Austin Butler (*Elvis*)
- Colin Farrell (*The Banshees of Inisherin*)
- Brendan Fraser (*The Whale*)
- Paul Mescal (*Aftersun*)
- Bill Nighy (*Living*)

All five nominees for Best Actor are first-timers.

****Angela Bassett** in **Black Panther: Wakanda Forever*. / Marvel Studios

## Best Supporting Actress

- Angela Bassett (*Black Panther: Wakanda Forever*)
- Hong Chau (*The Whale*)
- Kerry Condon (*The Banshees of Inisherin*)
- Jamie Lee Curtis (*Everything Everywhere All at Once*)
- Stephanie Hsu (*Everything Everywhere All at Once*)

*Everything Everywhere All at Once* scores two Best Supporting Actress nominations, with **Stephanie Hsu** and **Jamie Lee Curtis** both being honored.

**Angela Bassett** makes history for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, becoming the first acting nomination for the megafranchise.

****Barry Keoghan** in **The Banshees of Inisherin*. / Searchlight Pictures

## Best Supporting Actor

- Brendan Gleeson (*The Banshees of Inisherin*)
- Brian Tyree Henry (*Causeway*)
- Judd Hirsch (*The Fabelmas*)
- Barry Keoghan (*The Banshees of Inisherin*)
- Ke Huy Quan (*Everything Everywhere All at Once*)

**Brian Tyree Henry** is a surprise here, right? I saw **Paul Dano** on a bunch of lists for his work in *The Fabelmans*. Fun to see the *Atlanta* star earn Oscar attention, though.

## Best Adapted Screenplay

- *All Quiet on the Western Front* (Screenplay by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson & Ian Stokell)
- *Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery* (Written by Rian Johnson)
- *Living* (Written by Kazuo Ishiguro)
- *Top Gun: Maverick* (Screenplay by Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie; Story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks)
- *Women Talking* (Screenplay by Sarah Polley)

*Glass Onion*’s lone Oscar nomination comes in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Awards folks, let’s give **Rian Johnson** the attention he deserves.

## Best Original Screenplay

- *The Banshees of Inisherin* (Written by Martin McDonagh(
- *Everything Everywhere All at Once* (Written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert)
- *The Fabelmans* (Written by Steven Spielberg & Tony Kushner)
- *Tár* (Written by Todd Field)
- *Triangle of Sadness* (Written by Ruben Östlund)

## Best Animated Feature Film

- *Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio*
- *Marcel the Shell with Shoes On*
- *Puss in Boots: The Last Wish*
- *The Sea Beast*
- *Turning Red*

There have been 21 Best Animated Feature Film winners. Eleven of those winners have been Pixar films. An additional four have been Walt Disney Animation films. Will *Turning Red* be another win for Disney/Pixar?
