The Oreo cookie — arguably a more American cookie than even the humble chocolate chip — celebrated its 113th birthday this past Thursday. I have to apologize to **Snackology** readers for not commemorating the holiday, but I’m going to hopefully make up for it with my latest find: **Oreo Golden Birthday Cake cookies**.

While the standard chocolate variety of Birthday Cake Oreos are always on shelves, the golden cookie version [has been missing for over a decade](https://people.com/oreo-is-releasing-double-chocolate-cakesters-and-golden-birthday-cake-cookies-11682383?ref=theomnicosm.com).

Are the Birthday Cake Golden Oreos worth that long of a wait? Are they an appropriate way to celebrate Oreo’s 113th birthday? What do you get for the cookie that has everything?

### Where I found it

My usual **Harris Teeter** had swapped the Birthday Cake Golden Oreos into their standing Nabisco display.

### What I paid

Oreos were on sale for **$4.99**, down from the usual $5.79.

### My thoughts

I know it’s sacrilegious to say that the golden Oreo cookie is better than the chocolate Oreo cookie … but it’s sometimes true. In the case of the two Birthday Cake varieties, I think the golden version has the edge.

Opening the package of Birthday Cake Golden Oreos, there’s the distinctive one-two punch of the golden cookie and the Birthday Cake creme. (With rainbow sprinkles!) There was a time when Oreos came in either chocolate or golden cookies — a time before red velvet cookies or cookies with [popping candies in them to mimic a soda](https://www.theomnicosm.com/hey-you-got-coca-cola-in-my-oreos/). The Golden Oreo is a throwback, and it’s a perfect pairing for the Birthday Cake creme.

The chocolate version of the Birthday Cake Oreo is our daughter’s favorite variety of Oreo. She doesn’t always eat the cookies themselves, but that white-and-rainbow creme is the first part of the Oreo to disappear.

I didn’t deploy that method of eating an Oreo for my taste test here. But I did forget that I was doing a taste test. I usually take a bite or two before offering a new cookie or candy to my wife or daughter for their thoughts. By the time I had turned around from our dining room table to find them, I had already stuffed the entire cookie into my mouth.

The Birthday Cake Golden Oreos are very good.

### Final verdict: BUY

I’m not sure how long these cookies will be on shelves. The chocolate version of the Birthday Cake Oreo is a standard variety now, but I haven’t seen anything from Nabisco to hint that their Golden Oreo counterpart will join them. Do your patriotic duty and celebrate Oreo’s 113th birthday by picking up a pack when you find them in stores.

The true test of whether or not the Birthday Cake Golden Oreos are a hit or not will come later tonight when our toddler realizes that we’re out of the standard chocolate flavor …
